“A periscope is an instrument for observation over, around or through an object, obstacle or condition that prevents direct line-of-sight observation from an observer’s current position. In its simplest form, it consists of an outer case with mirrors at each end set parallel to each other at a 45-degree angle.”
In response to the triumph pavilion 2015 design competition, which sought out sky-oriented proposals to be temporarily installed in London’s Museum Gardens, the proposal was conceived as a periscope structure, offering unexpected views upward.
The volume contains two large mirror panels angled in such a way that horizontal viewing is diverted to a vertical orientation. The pavilion’s form references the 45 degree tilt necessary for the periscope’s functionality, while seating areas infill open spaces.
The internal space is intended for rest and reflection on the natural phenomena of the park setting; while the structure’s design also responds to efficient construction, utilizing interlocking wood boards, posts, and beams with standard dimensions and repetitive joinery
